Options max pain is the strike price at which option buyers, in aggregate, lose the most money at expiry · equivalently, the price where the total payout owed by option sellers across all open calls and puts is minimized. The theory behind watching it is simple: sellers, often sophisticated desks and market makers, have a financial incentive for price to expire near that level, and hedging flows around large expiries can gravitate toward it. In crypto, max pain is most relevant for BTC and ETH options on Deribit, which dominates crypto options open interest, plus growing SOL markets.
The calculation is mechanical and uses only open interest data:
Because it is driven by open interest, max pain moves as positioning changes. A wave of new call buying above spot drags it upward; heavy put accumulation pulls it down. It is a positioning snapshot, not a forecast.
Be honest with yourself about its limits: max pain describes where option sellers would profit most, not where price must go. Nobody, and no metric, predicts prices.
MAXPAIN.trade shows options max pain for BTC, ETH and SOL, computed from Deribit open interest, alongside the rest of its derivatives suite: a real-time liquidation tape from Binance, Bybit and OKX, open interest and funding comparisons across exchanges, a liquidation heatmap clearly labeled "estimated", and the Pain Index. The platform is funded transparently by exchange affiliate partnerships: verifying an exchange UID registered under MAXPAIN's code unlocks premium extras, and exchanges share fee revenue with us, so you never pay anything.
Not financial advice. Max pain is an informational metric derived from open interest and does not predict where price will settle. Options and leveraged derivatives carry substantial risk of loss · do your own research before trading.
